What size dog grooming straight shear is most effective-7,7.5, or 8 inch?

I personally have 2 8 inch shears - one curved and one straight. and 2 5 1/2 inch shears. My preference is the 8 inch but for some things on the smaller dogs the smaller ones are easier and safer.
